It’s been a while since Deadpool & Wolverine hit theaters, and the world can’t stop talking about it. Whether it’s the story, Deadpool’s wild jokes, or the many surprising cameos, like Channing Tatum’s, the film has made a big impact. Fans were especially excited to see Channing Tatum finally join the Marvel universe as Gambit.
Channing Tatum’s Cajun accent made his lines hard to understand without subtitles, making the audience laugh whenever Gambit spoke. This also made it hard for his co-star Dafne Keen, who played X-23, to keep a straight face while filming. She even had to ask Tatum to stop talking during her scenes.
Tatum’s role as Gambit was a big surprise given his past bad luck with the character. In the movie, he was part of a resistance group with Jennifer Garner’s Elektra, Wesley Snipes’ Blade, and Dafne Keen’s X-23. Keen and Tatum spent a lot of time filming together, and his one-liners with the heavy Cajun accent often disrupted her serious character.
On the ComicBook’s Phase Zero podcast, Keen shared that Tatum’s accent made it hard for her to stay serious. She ended up telling him to “shut up” during her scenes to stay in character.
The Logan actress stated,
I had to tell him that, on my shot, he couldn’t say his lines. I kept breaking character because I was doing my brooding Wolverine vibe. I was like, ‘Yeah, let’s f-cking go. And then he’d be like, [imitates Tatum] ‘I was laying my nut in my buttery…’ ‘No, shut up. I need to do my job over here. You’re making it so hard.’
While Keen gave credit where credit’s due, she added that since Tatum’s hilarious one-liners had her breaking character left and right, fans could probably see it happen somewhere in the film as well.
But he’s so good. Even the formation when he’s like, ‘I’m about to make a name for myself.’ I was like, ‘No.’ Again, I’m calm and collected and this guy is just like yapping in my ear. He’s also, he’s right in front of me and it’s a full frontal shot. You can probably see it somewhere, [me] dying.
Since this was just a cameo, we didn’t get to see Tatum’s Gambit as much as we would have liked to. Here’s hoping that this wasn’t the end of his run in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and that he’d be back for more; a solo film, hopefully.
